Three Things You Can Do Today to Improve Your Sleep

When it comes to ‘fixing’ our sleep, we all want to see immediate change. However, the reality is that if you want to find solutions to a long-term sleep problem like insomnia, it may take a little time.

However, the good news is that if you are struggling with your sleep, there ARE some simple steps you can take that should begin to improve your sleep from the get-go. So, here are my three top tips for improving your sleep tonight…

  1. Go to bed later tonight. Spend your evening doing something that you enjoy, like visiting a friend, reading a book, or calling a loved one, and go to bed half an hour to an hour later than your normal bedtime if you can manage it. This will help build your appetite for sleep, making it easier to fall asleep once you get into bed.

  2. Write down your worries and fears about lack of sleep, or anything that’s on your mind in general. Putting pen to paper and getting these thoughts out of your head is a therapeutic way of clearing your mind before bedtime, making it less likely that you’re going to begin worrying about everything the minute your head hits the pillow.

  3. Ground yourself in the moment. On the hour every hour, do something completely mindfully. For example, every time you make a cup of tea be present, what can you hear, what can you smell, and how does it feel to pick up the mug? When your mind starts to drift (very normal!) just gently bring it back to the present again. This way you are teaching your body how to be in the moment, which is where we need to be to sleep well.
