Why sleep is not a magic cure for stress
We all know that when you can't sleep, it quickly becomes the most important thing in the world to you. However, by now you have probably realised that the more you focus on sleep, the more elusive it becomes, which only leads to it become even more of a focus, which then impacts your sleep further.
So, I want to tell you something I think every poor sleeper needs to hear.
Sleep is not a magic cure!
Although sleep is undeniably a vital pillar of wellbeing, it is not the only one, and you can’t overcome stress with sleep alone. You can’t put all your eggs in one basket with sleep and think it will help overcome all your problems.
The fact is, anxiety is exhausting. Lots of people I work with don’t simply have a sleep issue, they have a stress issue too.
We are not designed to live in our head all day long. So, never switching off and never taking time out to be in the present will of course result in not only poor sleep, but constant tiredness too. The truth is, if you are stressed, then even 10 hours of deep, quality sleep won’t result in you waking up and feeling brand new.
Great sleep won’t make you happier if you are stressed, it won’t give you energy if you never take time to rest and it won’t make you leap out of bed if your life doesn’t fulfil you.
That’s not to say you shouldn’t bother trying to improve you sleep, but you should be aware that it’s not a magic cure for all your wellbeing and happiness issues. Instead, you should follow tried and tested methods to improve your sleep, but also look at your lifestyle and notice how much worry and stress may also be impacting on your energy levels.
