Three Things to Do After a Bad Night’s Sleep

We’ve all been there, the moment the alarm goes off in the morning after a terrible night’s sleep, and the catastrophic thoughts begin.

If you’ve slept terribly, it can be really easy to spiral into some negative thinking around how bad your day’s going to be because of your bad night’s sleep.

However, there are some important steps you can take to help minimise the impact of this on your day and get yourself back on track. So, here are my three top tips for what to do after a bad night’s sleep.

  1. Remind yourself, you’ve survived this before. Every bad night’s sleep you’ve ever had, you have coped, and you have gotten through the day. So, however tired you are and however terrible today may feel, you will get through it.

  2. You can do things to give yourself more energy. So, have a think about what you find enjoyable and what you need to do today to make yourself feel good. Is it to do some exercise? Or to drink some more water? Perhaps to have some downtime? Whatever it is, move your focus to this, rather than focusing on the fact you had a bad night’s sleep. You’ll be surprised how much better this makes you feel.

  3. Remember, the worse your sleep was last night, the better your sleep could be tonight. If you have a terrible night’s sleep, you’ve now built up a really good sleep drive. Just don’t go to bed too early tonight, make sure you set your alarm for tomorrow morning, and actually, you now have a much better chance of sleeping well.
