Case Study- a new mum suffering from Insomnia
Often, becoming a new parent can trigger a bout of poor sleep. Below is a case study written by a lady who subscribed to the Sleep Well, Live Better Online Course and the fantastic results she found in such a short space of time. It really is heartwarming to read these stories. If you are struggling with poor sleep please don’t accept it any longer, you CAN improve your sleep.
“Last Summer, after returning to work from maternity leave, I had one bad night’s sleep where I woke at 3am and couldn’t get back to sleep. This somehow triggered months of insomnia where I took 3 to 4 hours to fall asleep each night. Some nights I didn’t sleep at all for worrying about getting enough sleep. I was sleeping on a mattress on the living room floor as my restlessness was also keeping my husband awake. I was worrying about sleep constantly and my GP had spoken to me about sleep hygiene and prescribed anxiety medication. My mother in law heard Kathryn talk on Chris Evans’ radio show and suggested I look into her insomnia online course. I decided to give it a go as I was just desperate to get my life back. Within a week of starting the course, I was already worrying less and sleeping better most nights. I learnt that all of the things I’d put in place to help my sleep more we’re actually creating a sort of conditioned insomnia. The early nights, rigid bedtime routine (including brushing teeth in the dark!!), avoidance of any caffeine and saying no to any social events in case I have a bad night, were actually reinforcing the anxiety around going to sleep. Just changing my behaviour around sleep pretty much got rid of the insomnia and only left me with ‘bad nights’ when away from home or on a Sunday before work. The latter part of the course dealing with irrational worries around sleep helped the rest. My husband and I are now back in the same room after 6 months apart and I fed I have my life back! I am so grateful to Kathryn for producing the online course and feeI I have learnt skills for life that will help me, should I ever slip back into the sleep anxiety cycle again. The videos, leaflets and activities were pitched just right to support someone that has never accessed therapy before and wouldn’t be able to afford 1:1 sessions. It was worth every penny.”
